I can understand the reason for your apprehension, i would hope that the Government on their part would have completed their due diligence. In any business engagement especially in the realm that is being floated by the Chinese, as part of the due diligence a thorough SWOT analysis has to be done such that it can vividly paint a picture, extrapolating into the next century. One is able to mitigate any inherent risk that could create a lob sided relationship. The relationship can be a win- win if it is crafted with the interest of state and the people at heart as opposed to an opportunity for self.

 

Though on the surface it would appear that we need the Chinese in face of non existent infrastructure, erratic power supply and myriad of other failings, the truth is that the Chinese needs us more than we need them and they know it. So there lies our bargaining chip, you must always bargain from a position of strength, always!. Nigeria remains the largest market in the African continent and a viable gateway into Africa with an endowed capacity to rival and surpass Brazil as the World food basket. Avoiding alliance just because it could benefit another party would be anti development and counter productive and further relegate us to the bottom in the new World Order. What needs to be done is to ensure that all alliances places us in a position to benefit more with all engagement clearly defined on day one. We have had many missed opportunities, especially with Russia, it is my hope that this one is not squandered.

We tried the Americans, the Russians, the Europians, now let's see how much the Chinese are willing to pay to take over Edo State.  Is this a good thing? Only the future can tell. The Chinese are only looking for things that will benefit their billion plus people.  I am wishing my people all the best.

ME    Date: Wednesday, 2 November, 2011, 1:59 The Chinese envoy was in Benin recently and wants to establish ICT and Agriculture projects with the State.They are particularly keen to tap the fertile land,rubber and palm oil that we have.This is a welcome news. In my opinion Edo state should partner with the Chinese and move the state from this oil business that is now a curse,breeding thieves, violence,and dislocating communities. China has a population of shall we say 1 billion and yet they are able to feed themselves and conquer hunger.They invented noodles and vegetables that is now able to sustain the populance and prolong life expectancy Agriculture and human capital are vital to economic development. China,Japan,Korea have no natural resources and yet they are now leading economics of the world why Nigeria with all the resources can't even generate energy, people are hungry and no sufficient petrol to run cars.and no invention with all the PhD's. So agreement with China on rubber,palm oil,food/fruit processing, conversion of raw materials into finished food and products is very welcome. Okunsebor writes from London.
